Why Make Your Own Fluid?
You need windshield washer fluid to see clearly while you drive. It washes away dirt and grime. However, you do not need to buy expensive bottles from the store. Many people make their own at home. First, it saves money. Second, it is better for the environment. Finally, this windshield cleaner will not make things worse. If you have damage to your windshield in need of repair, store bought cleaner soak in and ruin the chances of a proper windshield repair. If chemicals have been applied, make sure that you stop by Pitstop for a complimentary primer treatment!
Ingredients You Will Need
You probably already have everything you need in your kitchen. Here is the list:
Water
White vinegar OR rubbing alcohol
Dish soap (optional)
A clean spray bottle or jug
Ideally, you mix water with vinegar OR alcohol. This cleans the glass without leaving streaks. Also, you can add a tiny bit of dish soap (2-3 drops only)for extra power.
NOTE: For cold climates, use 1:1 water and rubbing alcohol so that the fluid will not freeze. For warm climates, use 1:1 water and vinegar.
Step-by-Step Directions
Making this fluid is fast and easy. Just follow these steps:
Mix: Grab a clean bottle. Then, mix one part white vinegar (or rubbing alcohol) with three parts water. For example, if you use one cup of vinegar, add three cups of water.
Add Soap (Optional): You can add a few drops of dish soap if you want. But be careful. If you add too much, it will get too bubbly. 2-3 drops max.
Winter Tip: Do you live in a cold place? If so, it is very important to use rubbing alcohol instead of vinegar. Mix the alcohol and water 1:1. This stops the fluid from freezing in your car.
Shake: Close the bottle tight. Next, shake it gently to mix everything together.
Test: Before you fill your car, test a little bit on your windshield. Make sure you like how it works.
Fill: Open the hood of your car. Find the washer fluid cap. Finally, pour your homemade mix in.
NOTE: For cold climates, use 1:1 water and rubbing alcohol so that the fluid will not freeze. For warm climates, use 1:1 water and vinegar.
How to Store It
Keep any extra windshield washer fluid in a cool, dark place. Ideally, keep it out of the sun so it lasts longer. Remember to shake it again before you use it next time.
Summary
Making your own windshield washer fluid is a smart choice. It is cheap, easy, and safe for your windshield. Plus, it avoids the harsh chemicals found in store-bought bottles. So, give it a try today!
